Clinical Trial for Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation

Options

I will be seventy on my birthday in November. I was diagnosed with a small one centimeter Invasive Ductal Cell Carcinoma in June and told that after lumpectomy I would need six weeks of daily radiation treatment to follow up. The Hospital that biopsied my left breast and found the cancer did not offer any other radiation except for six weeks of total breast radiation. At that point, I switched over to care from a surgeon at a teaching hospital which offered APBI. I completed surgical removal of the small, one centimeter, stage one cancer on August 4th, no cancer was found in the one sentinel node removed.

A clinical trial of a type of APBI radiation that involves only one treatment of targeted radiation has become available. However, given my age, I am unsure as to whether or not to go through the whole process. Should I? Or just go on the Hormone Therapy Medication (not sure which ones yet) I know that many breast cancer victims would love to be in my low risk (according to the results of Oncotype DX testing) category. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks to all

Hi Charliegirl25, I'm 58 with a similar diagnosis. My "cavity" was too small for internal radiation so my RO (Texas Oncology) recommended a 5 day intense external radiation treatment. It required going twice a day with at least 4 hrs between treatments. Easy peasy!!!

He said to be prepared for a moderate burn & some pain but I used manuka honey umf15+ on the area and it worked great! I work so I put saran wrap over it to keep from getting it on my clothes ... still a little messy though. Lol!

Doc was surprised about me using honey but he'll be even more surprised when I go back in 10 days and he sees how well it worked!

I hope they can come up with a quick and affective plan for you Charliegirl25!

    Best wishes!
