ALND with radiation

My surgeon is planning to take out 20 nodes and the plan has been for me to have radiation also. My RO wasn't aware that 20 nodes would be removed when we discussed radiation so I don't know if that will change. Just wondering how common it is to radiate the axillary region after a big dissection. And for those that have done this, did you develop lymphedema? That is my main concern, I was told I have a 20-30% risk following ALND and worry that will double if the area is then radiated.

Thanks!

I wonder if whether or not you still get radiation depends on what they find in your lymph nodes?

I had 19 nodes removed and all 19 were positive. Rads were done over that area and aroind a little bit to back. In addition to chest and up side of neck.

I had 17 removed from ALND 4 pos

2 removed from SNB side 0 pos

The general and somewhat vague criteria is more than 3 pos nodes trigger radiation. I do have mild LE and additional fluid build up but nothing major or painful enough to prevent or delay 30 sessions covering right chest underarm and little bit on the right back side.

I had 20 cancerous out of 20 removed followed by radiation. I developed lymphedema immediately after surgery which is mostly managed now 12 months later but I still need to wear a sleeve and glove every day. My bigger problem now is nerve compression from all the treatment.
