Hi

My name is Sara, I am a preschool teacher and started working in the classroom again last week. I haven't figured out how to tell my 24 little 3-5 year old preschoolers about my mastectomy and everything else. I have already told my co-teachers and they have been very supportive. How did you tell your students about your BC along with your treatment, and did you tell all of your parents too?

Thank you for any advice you can provide.

My story I am 33 years old and this past June had a mastectomy(right breast) to remove a 17cm borderline phyllodes tumor. My path report also showed that I have ADH, and my MO is putting me on Tamoxifen sometime this month or next. This summer has been very overwhelming and I have learned so much about myself and life in general. Coming to breastcancer.org has been my lifeline and a great support these last few months.

Do you have any tips for how to manage nerve pain and other SE from BC medication in the classroom?

Thank You all for your support and help!

Hugs and Love,

Sara

    Hi Sara,

I don't think I would tell preschoolers anything. When I had to suddenly leave my 4th graders, I wrote a note to parents saying that I had to have surgery. I also told the students the same thing and they didn't really question it. A few parents knew why I was leaving, but I am not sure if they shared it with their children. I was careful about saying cancer in case they had relatives that had passed away from cancer. I also don't think you need to tell parents, unless you are particularly close to some of them. As far as nerve pain, I have it in my feet and the only thing that helps is wearing supportive shoes. I am sorry that you are here, but this place is full of supportive people and information. Have fun with your preschoolers!
