Fibroadenoma, usual ductal hyperplasia, your experiences?
Hello everyone,
Hope this message finds you all well. I was diagnosed with having a fibroadenoma with usual ductal hyperplasia about 1.4 x 1.2 x 0.9 cm, BIRADs category 4A.
I'm just asking here to get an idea of your experiences and what you had to do as follow up. My primary doctor found a breast lump during my yearly checkup. She recommended I have an ultrasound for diagnosis since my breast tissue is dense due to my age (28). So I did. After the ultrasound, the radiologist said "Great news, it looks benign, but the majority of women have biopsies to be sure. You certainly can, or can skip it". I said "You know much more than I do about this subject, what do you recommend?" and he said "I'd say go ahead. It's an easy procedure and will give you peace of mind and it is often times covered by insurance". Ok, sounds good. However, I was left feeling really unsure after the entire experience. After reading my radiologist's report, my primary doctor called me and sounded confused: "I guess I'm really confused, why did the radiologist recommend a biopsy?" (Which, in turn, confused ME further) She then said "This really doesn't sound right since it's only a BIRADs 4A. I am so sorry" and referred me to have a consultation or 2nd opinion with a surgeon who has specialty in breast conditions, which I did. More confusion, the surgeon echoed the same points as the radiologist and said she really recommended doing a core needle biopsy due to family history of breast cancer. Ok, that's solved. So I did.
Anyway, thankfully everything came back benign as I said - usual ductal hyperplasia. My surgeon recommended coming back in 6 months for a mammogram...
But wait, I had a mammogram for my clip placement after the biopsy and the notes said "Inconclusive mammogram results due to breast density". So is this mammogram really going to be able to tell us much?
Honestly, I'm so confused. I feel like I got tossed around at the doctor's office even after having 3 separate opinions, now I got the bill for the biopsy which was $1,600 and the ultrasound which was $450, this was after insurance... yiiiiikes. I was OK with that as a diagnosis, you can't put a price on health, of course. To add to the confusion, when I called ahead to my insurance company before the biopsy they said I'd only pay $600 out of pocket for the biopsy... more on that later...
The surgeon didn't speak to me directly about my results, just had her nurse call while she was in the background and the nurse told me "it's very important you come in for follow-up every 6 months since it's hyperplastic which means it's changing rapidly".
Anyway, sorry for writing a novel - I guess I don't quite know what to think. What was your experience like with having a fibroadenoma diagnosed? Do you/did you go in for follow up? According to the surgeon, this lesion has "no more chance of turning cancerous than any other cell in your body" - so I don't know if it's worth it to shell out goodness knows how much for a mammo every 6 months.
Thank you so much for reading and take care.Comments

I have a fibroadenoma in my right breast for the past 2 years. At first I was told to come back after 6 months but I was way to nervous about it so I went back after 3--no growth. Then I went back after 6 months, no growth. After a year they couldn't find it and now it's back lol but shrank slightly. I also did an MRI recently and it confirmed fibroadenoma and braids 2. The first time it was found it was a biraids 3. I was ready to biopsy but the Drs really advised against it as they were very sure it was only a fibroadenoma... they were right. Definately monitor it closely

Hi
I just found out yesterday I have fibrocystic changes in right breast and fibroadenoma in left breast. I was told to have an ultrasound every 6 months. I have extremely dense breast so mammogram is out. When I went for yearly mammogram the results were normal. Then had ultrasound saw something in left breast that was abnormal. They recommended a breast biopsy.
