OncotypeDX about to become faster & maybe cheaper?
OncotypeDX is about to become faster & cheaper
Genomic Health announced they will partner with Biocartis to use the latter’s Idyllis platform to develop an in vitro version of the OncotypeDX 21-gene assay that can be performed in hospitals, cancer centers, pathology labs, etc. Currently, patient tumor samples have to be sent to Genomic Health’s central lab on the W. Coast, and it can take 10-14 days to get results (at a cost of >$4K per test, not always covered by insurers). On-site or same-city testing will shave days off the waiting time for results and likely be much less costly.

That is awesome! I was lucky to have my insurance cover the test!

That would be something wouldn't it. I was happy too that my insurance covered it. Waiting for it to come back was tough. i'd jump every time my phone would ring during that 1 1/2 weeks.

Me 2 beach - I got the call almost 2 weeks later. Thankfully my BS's assistant started the conversation with good news..I remember almost fainting when I saw their no on caller ID. I cried like a baby when she gave me my report. Low score@11. The rest of the report was good as well.
My insurance paid for mine too. Thank goodness because $5k would have been tough to handle with all the other bills associated with BC. I know Genomic Labs said if insurance didn't cover it they would work something out on a sliding scale.
Good news for ladies who can benefit from the test now.

Great news!

My insurance paid too, with no co-pay, which was a surprise because I wasn't yet on Medicare. But those 10 days before the results showed up in my portal felt like a lifetime. Hoping this is also the precursor to faster genetic mutation testing.

ChiSandy, this is indeed wonderful news! I'm not enjoying the wait for Oncotype DX results very much; it's good to find that for others down the road, the wait won't be as long.

My Oncotype Dx DCIS test was ordered on September 18th and this morning, October 1st, I received an email from my PCP with the results. i was told when the order was placed that if the cost was going to be more than $100. I would get a call from Genomic Health.

The Score of my Oncotype Dx DCIS test was 26 with an 8 percent risk of recurrence of the cancer. They tell me Radiation therapy can cut the risk in half. Now I'm have to decide if the benefits of radiation therapy outweigh the risks. I'm thinking hormone therapy alone makes more sense.
-
I'm assuming you had lumpectomy, as with DCIS chemo isn't given and mastectomy is not normally followed by radiation. And a score of 26 for the DCIS version (which determines the appropriateness of radiation after lumpectomy) is much lower risk than the same numerical value for the IDC version (which determines how much of an advantage adding chemo to hormonal therapy confers). How old are you? How extensive was the DCIS? What grade?
