DCIS stage 0 -MRI and genetics results are in

Hi,

I was diagnosed about 2 weeks ago DCIS stage o, hormone positive, right breast, images are currently saying it is under 5mm. It has been a whirlwind. Finally the MRI results are in (no other cancer!!) and all gene testing is negative (also YAY!) - my mom had breast cancer and then died of ovarian cancer (10 years of cancer in total). I am still leaning strongly toward BMX.... My plastic surgeon even said that MRI and mammograms can not pick up everything that could be presentand there could in fact be a gene that has not been diiscovered at this time. Thoughts?

JDK, my thoughts are mainly that we all have to decide what we can live with. There are factors that influence each of us differently, for example our age, whether there is a history of repeated call backs and biopsies, the grade and size of our bc, genetics, other health issues etc (the list is long). There is a really nice thread with a comprehensive post by Beesie that you might want to read. It won't tell you what to do, but it may clarify things to consider when making your decision. Ultimately, you will be the one who has to be happy with your decision, and if you are, then it was the right one.\

    the thread is here: https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/91/topics/849193?page=1#post_4828669

    Good luck!

    JDK,

I agree with MTwoman that Beesie's posts on LX vs. MX vs BMX can be very helpful, however there are actually two different versions of that. One is for women who have invasive breast cancer (Stage 1, etc.) and that is the one the link in MTwoman's post will take you to.

The other list is for women who only have DCIS (Stage 0). Since there are some very different considerations (and research materials) relevant for each, I think you'll want to take a look at the post specifically written for women like you, with Stage 0 (non-invasive) cancer. You can find that post "here."

In addition, since you've recently been diagnosed with DCIS, you might also want to read Beesie's posts on "A layperson's guide to DCIS", in addition to the discussion of things you may want to consider as you decide on your surgical approach (the link in the previous paragraph).

Both are very helpful, as Beesie is one of the best researchers and most articulate writers here.

    HTH,

    LisaAlissa

since your mom had ovarian cancer, did they also test for genetic mutations related to ovarian cancer? That would be important too especially since the DCIS ishormone positive.

Thank you for all of your responses! I'm sorry it took me do long to reply. Yes, they tested me for 25 genes which included the ovarian cancer genetic mutations. They were all negative. However, my surgeon even stated that something probably has to be going on for my mom getting breast and ovarian cancer....(they are finding out more all of the time.)

    JDK...

First off, I'm sorry about your dx. I was diagnosed with DCIS IN Jan. I am happy to say I am on the other side of the tunnel. I had Rt side mastectomy with reconstruction & augmentation. I feel great about my decision and it really is a blink of time.

In between surgeries I was wearing a bikini in Florida. I encourage you to stay positive & rely on this community of loving warriors!

Linikjoo, I am sorry that your provider gave that recommendation. It doesn't seem to be a consistent one though. Please read this thread here: https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/27/topics/856826?page=1#idx_3 from someone who had DCIS with a micromet who got the okay for a pregnancy after one year. I think that you'll see that there are women who've had IDC who've also gotten the okay. This is something that might be worth a second opinion and much research. ((hugs))

    hi all!

To the initial ? This is a hard choice and I have unfortunately learned that even if you choose the ultimate surgery, there is no guarantee. What did you choose??

I recently was wondering if the bmx was the right decision for me when I found this, VPNI, google "VPNI for DCIS" it is a scoring system to determine tx for the PT with DCIS. It takes into account: age, tumor size, grade, and margin clearance- it scores each area 1-3pts and tells you how high your chances of recurrence is for example, i got 3's in all areas except for tumor size and my score was a 10 and that indicated a MX...

I ended up having a recurrence anyway though! I contribute it to the <1 mm margin clearance at my mastectomy... from everything i am reading now (except for the new 2014 BC guidelines set by the American academy of oncology) margin clearance DOES matter!!! I am just thankful (and shocked) my recurrence was still DCIS as many are not so lucky!

On another question, I still really want another baby! All my doctors are giving me the go ahead after radiation, before tamoxifen... i told the doc the only thing worse than getting cancer is getting it while being pregnant!!!!!! Like- are they all sure it's safe?!? I am having the hardest time deciding if TTC now is right for me. I haven't found any stories of women having a child AFTER a recurrence!!! Has anyone else??
