Business Owners-is it legal to have volunteers help?

Options

I was told that I can NOT legally have volunteers legally help me when I have Chemo at my brick & mortar store. Is this true? I can only have paid employees which become costly & hard to get- it's easier to have my husband or mother in law just help me at time or ex employees that truly want to just help me. I'm in NY. Does anyone know the law???

I am in CA, but I don't think there is any state law regarding the paid vs. volunteer status of those who accompany you to chemo. My understanding is that each infusion center creates their own policies according to the center's limitations, i.e. Size, privacy needs etc. Good luck and I hope you get it sorted out.

PS: What is a brick and mortar chemo "store" ? I doubt there are any virtual chemo centers 😉.

I read this as you own a store and people have offered to help/cover in the store for you when you're too sick to manage on your own. Is that right?

At any rate, I have no idea, but wanted to speak up since the response didn't match my interpretation. I hope you can have all the help you need. Good luck

exbrnxgrl, I think she owns a business, and needs help running the store while she is having chemo.

Kim, I'm in Australia, and the only thing I can think of here that would impact having volunteers working is making sure they are insured in case they get hurt on the job.

Thanks! I should never respond to a post before my second cup of coffee! My apologies to the op.

I read the OP as saying that she has a store (a building) that she has a business in and had heard that friends could not volunteer to help her in the store while doing Chemo. I've never heard that friends can not volunteer to help out with a business when needed - I have from time to time in the past. Perhaps it has to do with insurance (Workman's Comp) if they are injured while volunteering in/with the business. If it is in a Mall or Strip Mall there may something in the lease that does not allow for 'volunteers' to 'work' there. Or would the 'volunteers' be from a 'Volunteer Agency'? Would also wonder if this might be a Union store so Union people must be used?

The best thing to do would be to contact the State for clarification of what can and can't legally be done.
