Bone Scan Accuracy? Please help!
My mom has ILC and just had a mastectomy. A tumor was sitting close to the sternum, but NOTHING on the MRI mentioned chest wall invasion or anything else suspicious aside from the 2 known tumors.
During surgery she wasn't able to get a surgeon in the deep posterior margin (it was invading pec muscle). Radiologist didn't seem very concerned and plans to boost that area.. She had negative nodes.
So, we get a call from the scheduler to schedule a bone scan today to rule out a 'sternal mass'. No other explanation was given. We went to bone scan. And this was result (of course, they post it on online portal on Friday night and we can't talk to anyone about it....)
A focus of abnormal signal in the mid sternum on the previous exam is not apparent as a focal area of increased activity. A tiny 3 to 4 mm area of slight increased activity seen in the more inferior sternum but this is in a different location and much smaller than the previous MR finding and is of doubtful significance. There is appropriate renal excretion of the radiotracer.
IMPRESSION: No definite bone scan correlate for the previous MR finding. Consideration of sternal biopsy is recommended.
I am freaking out. I'm having a hard enough time just helping my mom with a tough recovery, but now all of this bad news is just compounding. Would love any thoughts or insight.

I think it's a little too soon to freak out but understand completely. The phrase "suspicious for metastasis" is what would concern me. Sorry I can't offer more specific insight.

I had a ct scan that showed multiple small lesions in bone. Bone scan was normal. I had a bx that showed it was mets . I would go for the biopsy. I did a ct guided bx. Gentle hugs and prayers for your family
