After Radiation

Options

I got done with radiation about a week ago. The treated breast is red and swollen; maybe more than ever. before. I have been working with an OT and doing so has helped me increase my arm's range of motion despite having radiation on that side.

The OT recommended that I get a high impact sports bra for compression which I've done but I think these symptoms will be around for a while. I had a lumpectomy so I'm very happy to have a breast but the swelling, pain and tenderness is really getting me down.

It takes a couple of weeks for the radiation to get out of your system, it's still doing it's thing right now.....so you've just got to hang on for another week or so and then things with gradually start feeling better. It will take awhile and be gradual. I am glad you are working on your range of motion as that is harder to get back it you don't keep at it. I actually felt a more soft sports bra (or no bra at all when I was at home) felt better that squishing it into something constricting.

Radiation side effects will peak a week or so after your last treatment and then gradually get better. Hang in there, it will get better. I couldn't stand wearing a bra and I had some mild swelling---I went without a bra for a couple more weeks and then started wearing one again. Definitely keep up the range of motion exercises. I have to do mine everyday or I really feel it.

Seven months later and I'm still swollen, sore and achy. My range of motion is also limited. I'm due for a Mamo in September and I'm afraid it's gonna be sooooo painful.
