I've had constant discomfort and regular shooting pains in my left breast for months now. Gradually it's become more frequent and intense until I'm now at the point of daily pain and discomfort. Two weeks ago during a self exam I found a small lump in my left breast. A quick call to my doc got me in the next day and he was also able to find the lump and noted it was approx 2mm at 9 o'clock. Wednesday I went in for my first mammogram (I'm 31yo), and a follow up ultrasound. The ultrasound came back normal. They were unable to locate the lump or any other abnormality with the US despite the tech also feeling the lump. I was told the mammo was normal and sent home. The next day I spoke with an RN at my docs office that said there was scattered density with a large area precisely where my lump and primary discomfort is located. My dr wanted me back in two months to recheck, however, I've requested an MRI for a closer look or to be referred to a specialist. As of Thursday afternoon I've been waiting on a callback for the next step.

In the meantime, I've begun experiencing pain in my left armpit. It's been a mild discomfort and one that I associated with a newer bra that sits a bit higher than my others. I've been wearing this one more often as it has the best support and has helped minimize my general discomfort and pain. Then, yesterday while showering I noticed it was especially tender. I barely had to touch it before a large lump was felt, at least twice as big as the one in my breast. I had my husband check to make sure it wasn't all in my head and he confirmed it.

I know that I'm the absolute best advocate for my own health but I don't know what the right next step is. I'll be calling my doc first thing Monday to relay the new finding and I'm sure that'll help move things along. Any advice in the meantime? I'd especially love recommendations for non-medicinal ideas to alleviate the pain/discomfort. From personal experiences what tests have assisted any of you with similar issues?

Docs are sometimes hesitant to do an MRI because there are false positives involved, but sounds like that's where you are. Good luck getting the referral for the MRI and for a breast specialist.
