I had some bloody discharge in march of 2015. Then in May I had surgery to remove a polyp in the milk duct...came back with A typical cells..so I was to have an mri and then ultrasound every 6 months rotating. My last mri showed enhancement...what does this mean and breast surgeon wants me to have a ultrasound done as soon as possible....What are the next steps usually? Does this mean it could be cancer ...and I will need a biopsy? What is the ultrasound for? Any adive would be greatly apreciated thank you

    Vane-

    Let me share my story-

In April my husband, felt 'something different' on my right breast. That prompted me to do a self breast exam. Felt nothing. I did however, feel a small pea sized lump in my left breast. Made an appointment with the breast specialists. who did a mammogram and ultrasound, NOTHING.THEY SHOWED NOTHING. The 'lump' appeared benign, but because it was 'new' for me, they did a biopsy. The lump was indeed benign; however, they pulled some atypical cells from that area, which now gave me the diagnosis of ALH (atypical lobular hyperplasia).

Before doing a lumpectomy of that area, an MRI was ordered. The MRI showed areas of enhancement, and another biopsy was ordered (he took 25 samples) The radiologist, brought me into the office to discuss my MRI before the biopsy He went over the MRI, showed me the areas of concern, and informed me he was uncomfortable with the what it showed. Had the second biopsy, and the report showed a radial scar.

Breast Surgeon told me to have a lumpectomy of the scar and ALH, and there could not possibly anything to worry about. Radiologist said 'I am not buying this, something else is going on'. After speaking with him, getting his feedback, trusting his instincts and going with my intuition, I opted for a bilateral skin and nipple sparing mastectomy. SO GLAD I DID! Path came back DCIS in area of biopsy, as well as ADH. 25 samples, and it was missed.

Your MRI is showing an enhancement for a reason, do not be afraid to question why.

Thank you very much for your reply Leslie... glad they found the cancer you made the right choice. Im 28 now and very scared.. all over i have been trying to read on this...and hear alot of false positives...I sometimes just want to have a masectomy to not have to feel like a ticking time bomb...I asked the suregon if the enhancement was around the surgical site and she said no ...around there...I hope tomorrow I get some answers...with ultrasound..

    Hey. Vane-

How did it go? Hope you were able to get some answers, and find solace in all of this.

    Hi Leslie

I had the ultrasound yesterday but they couldn't find anything they were seeing on MRI. Radiolgist came in and told me that they something on the side of my breast like dots with lines coming from them...He is going to talk to my doctor about mri biopsy...He says it could be a typical sells. Im scared about the procedure if thats what they decide? Idk if I should push for it when she calls me.

    Vane-

If I were you, I would absolutely push for it. Remember, my ultrasound and mammo showed nothing, my biopsy ONLY showed atypical cells. It wasn't until the mastectomy that the cancer was found IN THE BIPOSY SITE, where he took over 25 tissue samples. Follow your intuition. Better to be safe, than sorry. Let me know what happens.

Hi, Leslie How are you doing?

I had a bilateral mastectomy on 10/02 so I wouldnt need radiation....and had expanders placed for reconstruction. Then at my post op appointment 10/11 my pathology report of all the tissue removed showed dcis...and a tumor Stage 1 grade 2 IDC ....I was shocked....none of my imaging showed this. I go friday to start chemo....I will have 4 round every 3 weeks....So much stuff so fast...
