Just found out have to get my breasts removed

So many choices, what did you do?
-
I had breast cancer twice...one in each breast, two years apart. I wanted a double mastectomy the first round, but they didn't advise it. Wish I had. Your choices would depend on your cancer's profile and what you would be comfortable with. I am getting along fine without breasts and didn't want reconstruction but I am older too. (((HUGS)))

I had BMx but only one involved. Wanted symmetry and not to have to worry as much about the other one. Scanxiety is awful. They feel fine now. Had the Diep as didn't want to worry about future surgeries. Tough upfront though but longer lasting

As you have given no information as to wbat exactly you are dealing with, it's hard to give any comment.
There are so many variables - type, stage, etc.

I'm a big fan of BMX - but that was for me. As Kicks says, what is your diagnosis? what is your treatment so far? are you ER/PR positive? HER2 positive? DCIS? IDC? ILC? Have they done a biopsy? Did they test serial nodes yet? Will you need rads? Chemo? Have you thought about reconstruction?
If you are unsettled about surgery, have you had a second opinion?
If you go to My Profile & enter your specs, we'll be better able to respond.

I had LX, plus re-excision due to dirty margins. Then my genetic testing came back dirty also, so after I finished chemo I had a PBMX w/out reconstruction. I thought I would be fine with that, but I'm emphatically NOT FINE with the outcome. I had a lot if healing issues, so there is terrible scarring. There is a DIEP in my future.

chose BMX as had increased risk for bc due to having had radiation to treat childhood cancer and there were mucricalcifications that they classified as pre-cancer in the other breast. The option of lumpectomy for both was on the table as an option for a short time but I was confident I wanted BMX and just deal with it now as thoroughly as possible. Opted for immediate natural tissue reconstruction known as DIEP flap. Chose natural tissue recon as it looks very natural, your breasts move with you and age just like the originals, and no need to have replacement surgery every 10 years or so. Very happy with decision and the results so far. Feel free to ask me any questions about it here or via private message. Happy to help.

personal opinion, and of course everyone is different. There is no right or wrong, but you definitely need to take the cancer profile into consideration. I had a BMX due to high grade DCIS in left breast, but I thought, hell, if I'm doing the left I might as well do the right. I don't regret my decision. I had immediate reconstruction and I couldn't be any happier with my results
