Hello Everyone,

My 86 year old Mother had a lumpectomy done 4 weeks ago. She has struggled since the day after the surgery. The incision site is infected, rounds of antibiotics, swelling and pain. In the past week she has mentally become confused, and anxious, she eats very little.. Yesterday she called 911 and then refused to be taken to the hospital.

I have tried and tried to get her in to see her Surgeon but no luck ( she does have her followup appointment on Friday)

are these side affects common?

I don't know what to do to help her.

any help would be greatly appreciated

Have them do a urine test for a UTI. Those sometimes cause confusion in older folks. She'd probably be willing to pee in a cup.

Is she running a temperature? If she is the antibiotics aren't working. If her temperature is high enough that can also cause confusion. I ended up in the hospital because the oral antibiotics weren't working.

Can you take her to her regular doctor, or any doctor?

often elderly people show symptoms of confusion and lack of appetite with a urinary tract infection. it can really mimics Alzheimer's or stroke the way it presents. Please make sure they test her for that and give proper antibiotics if it is.  Good luck.  I hope she is okay.

My 80 year old mom had a lumpectomy and had none of the side effects you describe.  In fact, she went to the casino

the next day after surgery to get her mind off of it.   I would echo what the others said - sounds like something else is going on...

The surgeon should see her immediately with these symptoms!!  Sending my best!
