How soon can I take intense group fitness classes after surgery?

Hi ladies,

I am recovering from 3 surgeries in the last 5 months - nipple delay / lymph node biopsy, mx with immediate reconstruction, and most recently fat grafting about 4 weeks ago.

I am so ready to start exercising regularly again and getting back into shape. I used to love taking intense group fitness classes, the kind with non stop cardio like jumping jacks, burpees, planks, and pushups combined with strength training.

How soon were you able to do these kinds of exercises after recovering from surgery? I want to get back into "bootcamp" kinds of classes, but also am hesitant as I don't want to overdo it and injure myself.

I started with a Soulcycle class this week, and have been walking by the beach almost everyday. Would love to hear how long you think I should wait before trying more vigorous exercise... or if you think I should go for it...carefully!

I look forward to hearing your responses. Also...I don't really want to announce to every single fitness instructor that I'm recovering from breast cancer...Can I just say that I'm recovering from several surgeries that have affected my arm and chest strength?

I appreciate any advice you can give me. Thank you!

My personal opinion is it's way to soon for intense classes. But you should ask your BS and you PS. And maybe your PCP and your GYN. The recommendations I've seen are to start VERY slow & work up. For example - if you were lifting 15-20 lbs, go back & start over with 1 lb weights. I know you miss it, but better to go slow than start over again.

Thank you Minus Two! I know you are right. I'm so eager to get back into shape, but I will follow your advice and take it slow. :)
