A friend (breast cancer survivor) recommended this book to me, "The New Generation Breast Cancer Book" by Dr. Elisa Port of Mt. Sinai Hospital (Dubin Breast Center). I devoured most of it in one sitting.

A good portion of the book is addressing women who have been diagnosed and there is a enough information for women who have not been diagnosed to help put things in perspective and be informed about various tests, advise about finding a doctor, a good team, etc. At least, I found it extremely helpful and thought some of you would too.

It was practical and easy-to-read. She also addresses myths as well as male breast cancer, lifestyle factors, complementary / alternative medicine (she is supportive of integrative medicine which is different from CAM though connected) and communicating with family, friends, pregnancy, clinical trials … My impression is that this is a good book for anyone who is worried and not diagnosed and for women and men who have been diagnosed before treatment. I just found it a good balance to information of all sorts I've read online even if what she says wasn't really what I wanted to hear. The best thing is that I felt she really emphasizes how different breast cancer is for each woman; that there is no one-size-fits all approach and with a solid team, the decisions that need to be made, can be made together and appropriately for each woman.

It is available on Amazon and she also has website: NewGenerationBreastCancerBook.com

Honestly, all of this is scary, unfamiliar, anxiety-inducing … And, I feel armed now with information and feel like I can ask more pointed, informed questions to my doctor(s). I had to skip some parts I was not yet ready to read and took walks or a break to breathe …

Hope this "review" helps in some way …
