Hi I don't quite understand what genetic testing shows, or reasons why you should get genetic testing. My mother is 50 and got breast cancer and has no family history of it, is that a reason to get genetically tested? And does her having breast cancer increase my odds of getting breast cancer? If anyone can explain I would really appreciate it.

I strongly recommend you find a licensed genetic counselor to consult regarding genetic testing. A LCG would ask you questions about your personal and family histories and tell you what, if any, testing would be appropriate. A LGC would also explain the pros and cons of testing, what insurance can be impacted by a positive result, etc. There are many complex issues associated with testing and it's important that you understand all of them before making a decision. One point to consider now is that, when applicable, it is always preferable to test the individual with cancer (known as the proband) rather than his or her relatives who have not been diagnosed with cancer.
