Low whit blood count

Options

hello, I am currently taking Taxol for breast cancer. My white blood counts have been low. Am I able to take a multivitamin like One-A-Day to help get my counts up?

    Hi Dixon-

Welcome to BCO! We hope you find support here. Have you read through our Weekly Taxol thread? Lots of great info there, and someone who may be able to answer your question: https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/69/topics...

Dixon - vitamins and supplements generally do not boost the production of white cells during chemo. The effect of chemo on all blood cells - white cells, red cells, and platelets is well known and expected. If your white count drops into a range that postpones chemo, or makes you vulnerable to infection, most oncologists will give you an injection of a drug that helps boost white cell production. I believe that with weekly Taxol, Neupogen would be the drug most commonly used as it can be given at the appropriate interval. You may see posts about a similar drug called Neulasta but it requires a longer interval between chemo infusions and is usually used with Adriamycin or Taxotere. Hope this is helpful.
