Abnormal pap smear/tamoxifen
Comments

Hi everyone,
Last week I had a pap smear and today I got a call that it came back abnormal. I now have to have a cervical biopsy and a uterine biopsy. Out of all the cells they test only one was abnormal ???? Crap! I really am sick of this. Has anyone had this happen while on tamoxifen? I've never had an abnormal pap smear until now. Now the waiting game begins. Biopsies are June 2nd and then I have to wait for results.
Thanks for any feedback

Hey Nancy - Yep it happened to me while on Tamoxifen. Subsequent testing was negative. I must have seen my gyn what feels like a dozen times while on Tamoxifen. Finally I said enough is enough and did the hysterectomy this year. Hope you get good results from the testing, and I honestly think you will. Big hug.

Thanks Jill - I hope it comes back ok. So annoying.

Well my MO just called and told me to stop tamoxifen.

Oh wow. Does he know anything else?
Tamoxifen - the gift that keeps on giving.
-
yeah I was surprised. Nope they don't know anything until I do the biopsies. I am so over this already
-
I totally get that. A real pain. My money's on it being nothing.
-
thanks. I also had an HPV test and it was negative so I'm baffled and I don't want to play anymore

I took Tamoxifen for 4 years. I initially took Arimidex but my MO switched me because Arimidex attacks the bones and I was borderline osteoporosis.
I'm betting it was the culprit too. I knew there are also risks of blood clots which I had when I was only 16. My MO told me I would be okay on it because I had 2 children since then. It's a crap shoot to be sure.
No drug comes without side effects or risks. Great we have to deal with the beast and the meds to keep a recurrence at bay. Is what it is unfortunately.
Btw I had an abnormal Pap smear many years ago and my Dr cut out the abnormal cells. It wasn't the C word and haven't had one since. Still I've thought of having a hysterectomy too just in case. I guess we need to cut out all our body parts to keep the C out. Crazy but I know women who have done just that. As they say walk a mile in our shoes. They can't begin to understand our fear factor.
Good luck and keep the faith. I'm living proof as are countless others on this website that you will get through this even with these annoying bumps in the road.

Thanks Diane. I really do hope it is the tamoxifen. Never had an abnormal pap before and I've had one every year for forever. Just when I get my life back this pops up.

I had an abnormal pap when I was much younger. On retest a month later, it was negative. Before they go charging ahead, you might ask for a recheck.

I think they are being hyper vigilant with me because of my history. They said I had two things - abnormal cells and they couldn't rule out dysplasia of higher grade and I had abnormal endometrial cells, but it was noted they are benign. I don't know what to make of that, but my MO and my ob/gyn want me to have the biopsies. My MO had me stop tamoxifen pending results. Not sure I even want to go back on it. Have taken it for 2 years and 4 months.
