Hi. I live abroad and i am looking for a contact for an oncologist who deals with tamoxifen as prevention in healthy high risk women. I have been told here that five years is the maximum time it is recommended to take tamoxifen, for prevention in healthy women, but am looking to have that verified by an expert in the US. If you have any suggestions, please contact me. thanks

I am considered high risk as well (ADH) and just yesterday had a very similar conversation with my BS, who has been following me 2x a year for 6 years now. I'm not on tamoxifen, however, but evista (raloxifene). I've been taking it for 2.5 years now (postmenopausal) and asked her whether I should continue for another 5 years after this current 5 year stint is over. She said that the current 10 year recommendations for chemoprevention apply only to women who already have cancer and are taking the drugs to prevent recurrence. Granted , we were not talking specifically about tamoxifen.

I would assume that your oncologist is more knowledgeable about your treatment than your gyn-- before I agreed to a significant surgery, I would want a second opinion on this. You could try contacting Johns Hopkins which has a helpful website that takes questions. I would think any oncologist would be able to offer you some guidelunes
