DCIS and new family history of BC

My mom, who just passed with alzheimers complications, also showed signes of BC in CAT scan before her passing. My Maternal Grandmother also had BC, not sure what kind, and Maternal Great Aunt. So, I was diagnosed with DCIS with a Mastechtomy last Sept. Should we now look into Genetic Counseling for my sister and neices?

You might want to consider genetic counselling. Depending on the standards of your particular insurer, the cost may even be covered!

A good genetic counselor will help you decide if genetic testing might be a good choice for you, and then help you consider the other ramifications for you if you do the testing.

It’s probably worth meeting with a genetic counselor to get their opinion. On the one hand, if all those people were diagnosed later in life, it might not be as significant as if they were diagnosed at a younger age, but on the other hand that is several members of your family tree, so I’m not sure what they would say.

My mother was diagnosed at 75, about 6 weeks before I was. I was told that because of her age at diagnosis that didn’t mean much from a family history perspective. They did recommend genetic testing for me because I was 45 and pre-menopausal, as well as an Ashkenazi Jew, but not because of my mother’s diagnosis.
