Private Health Insurance -- possible after stage iv diagnosis?

Now that I've been diagnosed with stage IV bc, I've been wanting our family to spend more time together. I currently have health insurance under my husband's employer. If he quits his job, would it be possible for me to buy private health insurance? and would the price charged be much higher due to my diagnosis? Just trying to figure out how to spend more time with my family but don't want to make my situation worse by no longer being able to afford health insurance when I so desperately need it now. Any advice or words of wisdom would be much appreciated!
