Would you read something into this?

edited April 2017 in Waiting for Test Results

Hello, I am new to this board. :) A few weeks ago, I went for a routine mammogram and got results that said I needed further testing. About a week ago, I had a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound which still did not clear things up. I was told that I would need a needle biopsy. My primary care physician immediately referred me to a "breast specialist" who will perform the biopsy next week. When I researched that doctor, I discovered that she is an oncologist. I realize that nothing is certain until I get the biopsy results, but does this sound normal to you? I didn't think it was customary to be have an an oncologist prior to a cancer diagnosis. I have a maternal aunt who was diagnosed with cancer prior to her 30th birthday and a cousin on that side of the family (not my aunt's daughter) who was diagnosed in her 30s. I am 45.

No, I wouldn't read anything into it. Most breast surgeons are probably considered surgical oncologists.Either breast surgeons or interventional radiologists do most breast biopsies. How could you be a breast surgeon who only deals with benign breast disease?

I don't think I'd read too much into it at this time. It sounds like this is a doctor who maintains two specialties. I'd be surprised if your PCP referred you to an oncologist under the ASSUMPTION that this is cancer. That's not generally how that works

The only thing I would read into being referred to a Breast Specialist is that you are being sent for the recommended next step in finding out what is 'there'. Just what should be done - seeing a Dr who has expertise in possible breast issues - not just some general surgeon who does not specialize in breast issues/surgery.

Remember that over 80% of biopsies will come back benign.

My experience - if they are really concerned about the 'whatever' that is being recommended to biopsy - they get in a big hurry to get it done - sooner rather than later.

No, don't worry. My oncologist told me that he sees anyone who has been diagnosed with a mass. Best wishes!
