GallBladder Stone
Wasn't sure where to post this since there's no misc board but I have a 2 cm stone. Anyone have their gallbladder removed with laproscopy? What was it like, hospital stay, etc. Haven't seen my doc yet, just saw the results posted on my online chart. I'm also battling a difficult UTI and have discomfort in my kidney areas. Abdominal u/s was done today and didn't say anything about anything wrong with my kidneys. Thanks

I had a "lap choly” back in 1994 after my second gallstone attack. (First attack, in 1988, they were still doing them as open procedures—a messy and long procedure requiring digging deep through layers of abdominal fat—because they couldn’t isolate a single stone and I was obese, they wouldn’t cut, sending me home and telling me to lose weight and not eat too much fat lest I get another attack). What a difference 6 years makes! I stayed two nights in the hospital, but HMOs (mine was owned by the hospital system) were more generous then. I needed the rest (I was a full-time working mom of a 9-yr-old). They discharged me as soon as I could fart. Four little holes, a suture or two each, covered with Band-Aid “spots.” The morning I was released, I was able to hang out on the deck chatting with neighbors. Four days post-release, we went out for tapas on our anniversary.
Nowadays, they don’t even do a “23-hour admission.” It’s usually an ambulatory outpatient surgery, much like lumpectomy—in early morning, home by dinnertime. Still little bitty Band-Aids, little to no pain (except riding home over potholes). You might be a little more flatulent for awhile (they do inject air for better visibility) and you will soon learn how much dietary fat you can tolerate without having to poop too copiously. Eventually, everything quiets down and you will go back to normal eating.

I will insist on being in the hospital even if it is outpt. For my bmx they wanted to do outpt but I said hospital- and I was in for 2 nights. For my te exchange I did outpt and I was in sheer misery when I got basically kicked out an hour after the outpt sx center closed. Couldn't make it up my stairs to get in my apt so wound up going to friends house to crash for the first 3 days until I could do those stairs. Not sure I have that option.
Do they insist on outpt or is it really up to you? Also, if I must do outpt I do have MC supplement which covers skilled nursing facility. I guess I could say I can't go home with these steep stairs and in pain of course and they'd send me there? Really prefer hospital even if it is outpt.
