Discordant core biopsy results lead to lumpectomy for final DX

I recently had a core BX after 2 tumors with highly suspicious traits of malignancy were found on mammography and ultrasound, the biopsy was benign, I was still referred to a Breast surgeon who has looked at all my testing, she even showed my husband and I all the images and explained why she is still very concerned...she has me scheduled for a wire bracketed lumpectomy. I am worried about how much tissue is normally taken out with this procedure? Has anyone had this happen to them, with the discordant results? It's bad enough to wait for one biopsy result, now we wait again.

Junetoo - Sorry you are having continued diagnostics and the accompanying anxiety. The amount of tissue would depend entirely on the size of the area of concern. Did she tell you what the dimensions were? Taking into account wanting good clean margins, the size of tissue will be somewhat bigger than the actual area of concern. It sounds like the BS feels that they may have missed the biopsy site? (hence the discordance, imaging and her opinion vs B9 pathology) Even though I know waiting and worrying is the absolute worst, I believe like your BS is acting out of prudent caution. My BS was the one who sounded the alarm for me, everyone else that saw or evaluated my lump said "don't worry, it's most likely nothing". He did not. He immediately encouraged me to pursue sampling, which meant we caught my bc very early; instead of 6 months or 1 year later. Try not to worry overly much, but I'd absolutely follow your BS's recommendations. Better to find out that it is B9, than not find out it isn't. ((hugs))

MTwoman, Thank you very much for the reply. I'm sorry you had to go through all of that, but I am glad that you found out when you did and caught it early! The 2 tumors are small 1.5cm and .7 cm and close to each other. I am hoping my boob will still look the same after she is done. I do want them out, and will feel better knowing one way or another what they are so I can deal with it accordingly. All kinds of things run through my mind regarding the possible results and future treatment etc, I don't think any one of us ever thought "OH yay, I might have breast cancer". Thanks again for taking the time to reply, ((hugs back))
