Is MRI necessary?

I'm completely new to this, so hopefully I'm doing it right.

I'm 27 years old. In late January, I noticed a small amount of clear discharge from my right nipple. Over the last couple months, the drainage has continued, I have had nipple changes, and now I have a significant amount of pain. All of my lab work has been normal. Today I had an ultrasound, but she only screened 1/4 of my breast. After the ultrasound, the radiologist told me it was completely normal, and nothing wrong. He basically told me to suck it up, but that he recommends a MRI if symptoms don't resolve in a couple months.

I guess I'm wondering if I should request the MRI sooner, wait 2 months, or just forget the whole thing all together. Although I'm concerned, the ultrasound tech and radiologist made me feel completely stupid.

I'd request the MRI sooner rather than later. It's probably nothing, but I'd rather have my mind put at ease with an MRI.

NEVER EVER be made to feel stupid! Take matters into your own hands and request the MRI. I agree with dc. Put your mind at ease. NO ONE, not even a doctor, will care for your own health more than you. Please let us know how you do.

ask your dr if he/she will order the mri anyway. It shows way more than mammo or ultrasound but it takes longer to do and is more expensive than the other 2. Better to be safe than sorry. Never forget that you are the one steering your health boat- no one else. A quote i came across about a year ago keeps getting more and relevant: don't base your decisions on the advice of others who don't have to live with the consequences. Doctors have a lot of information at their disposal that they use to advise us, however, he/she does not have to live with the outcome. Good luck!
