DCIS on biopsy

I've been reading these post for the past month or so, as I went through this so thought I would join.

I just had an ultrasound-guided biopsy for indeterminate microcalcifications that ended up at least ADH and "highly suspicious for DCIS." There was only a scantly sample, so no more could be said, but it seems like the surgeon and others say DCIS. They tried the ultrasound because I have implants and not much tissue so it was either that or surgical. So it was hard to do the biopsy and not much was there. I had ADH on a surgical biopsy about 7 years ago and have been followed. (The surgical was for microcalcifications that couldn't be removed with stereotactic). The reason I had the implants a couple years later is because my breast was quite deformed from the lumpectomy (I was barely a B), and I thought it was all benign at the time.

Now I have an MRI booked and then we will plan surgery. There are also microcalcifications in the other breast. Did anyone have bilateral dcis? Did an MRI show much more? I am thinking of having a mastectomy (a quarter of the small breast is already gone) but I guess the MRI will show more.

This has all been nerve wracking because I had to switch surgeons and this began a couple months ago, so I just want it over with.

Dear Haggar, Welcome to the community. We are so glad you reached out to our members. While you are waiting for some responses you might was to take a look at information on our main site about the risk of developing DCIS in both breasts. Keep us posted and let us know how things go. The Mods

Mammogram found the IDC in one breast. The MRI found the DCIS in the other. I'm so grateful they ordered that MR

    Haggar,

I initially presented with a lump that turned out to be a complex cystic mass that included DCIS. Nothing else of concern showed up on my mammo or US. I had an mri before heading into radiation, and that showed 2 more areas that also turned out to be DCIS. Since I had multi-focal DCIS, I ended up with MX instead of the originally planned LX. Good luck, and hoping that it all turned out to be ADH!

Thanks! The surgeon (and pathologist) seems to think it is DCIS - the biopsy sample was simply too small to say anything but "highly suspicious for DCIS." As far as I understand, they need a certain amount of tissue for more certainty - it was only one focus. With the ultrasound-guided, it wasn't possible (she didn't want to damage the implant and the lesion was too close to it). So, I am expecting DCIS, but it would be good if it were less than that (hopefully not more). Maybe the MRI will make it clearer - the surgeon is doing this before deciding on which surgery to do (whether lumpectomy or mastectomy). Unfortunately, the MRI is not for another couple weeks. I'm in Canada and I think we take things a bit slower over here, unless it looks immediately life threatening, which DCIS is not. So I guess I just learn patience through all of this - it's been tough waiting so far but I am at a good cancer center.

Well, the mri should show whether there is anything they didn't already know about, but only a pathology report will give you the final verdict - ADH, DCIS or "more". Sorry you'll have to wait for that most likely as well. glad you are at a good place for care and hoping you're getting support while you wait. Hot bath, soothing music, Netflix, and other sources of pampering are called for right now, no better time for it. ((hugs))
