Common to have TEs before DIEP?

Hello,

I always thought, and seen on other fb/breast cancer support pages, that many women went flat after mastectomy before they went for their DIEP recon. My PS said he can put in TEs before DIEP - but its not common practice.

The idea sounds very appealing - with skin-sparing mastectomy, have the TEs put in to preserve your own skin, finish adjuvent treatment - and DIEP recon. I wonder why (in Canada) that most lady opt for going flat instead? Is there a downside to this approach?

For those who had TEs, how 'bad' were they? I hear some pretty bad stories with TEs being uncomfortable, infections, pain etc. I'm a nurse

I have a TE in and honestly, I am looking forward to having it out. I have much discomfort in the whole area, but I can't tell if it's post mastectomy pain or that the TE, which is under the pec, is troubling me. Good luck to you on this journey.
