Dimpling on left breast with lump.

I am 41 years old with a family history of breast cancer. I happened to glance at myself in the mirror while raising my arm and noticed dimpling under my left nipple. I felt the area and a hard, non-painful lump was felt. No pain and not well defined. It is pretty rigid. I also noted a discolored reddish mole near the dimple area. I saw the doctor and have a mammogram and US on 3/22. I'm scared to death and kicking myself for not doing self-exam in mirror.

Sorry you find yourself, here the women in the group are awesome. I know how the waiting goes, I just had my breast MRI and now awaiting results. You have done the right thing by seeing the dr. Please keep us posted. ((HUGS))

indeed, the waiting is very difficult. You say you have a family history - have you discussed any genetic testing with your doctor? We're all here for you!
-
Yes I have spoken to the doctor about genetic testing. My grandmother and aunt on my maternal side were diagnosed with breast cancer. Regardless of the results, I'm insisting on blood test. The waiting and worrying is so difficult. I'm hoping they will do a biopsy that day if it looks suspicious, but from reading other posts it seems that would happen at a different time
-
Don't beat yourself up. I doubt that most women do their self-exams in front of a mirror. Now is the time to be kind to yourself. Waiting is hard enough, without deriding yourself for this.
Usually the biopsy is not done the same day. It takes an hour or so to do the biopsy, so it would really throw the schedule off if they dropped everything to do a biopsy. However, if they see anything suspicious on the mammogram they will likely do an immediate ultrasound. If they still see something, the radiologist will meet with you and explain his findings, then schedule a biopsy.

It's good to know what to expect as far as timing for the next step. I plan on doing some serious spring cleaning since I'm already scheduled off work for the next ten days anyway and spending a lot of time with the kids and husband. Anything to get my mind off of the worse case scenarios. I'm a nurse and tend to go through every scenario in my head so I can hopefully be prepared for every outcome. Trying to educate myself with good resources and not dr. Google

mammogram and ultrasound done today. Spoke with Radiologist after the ultrasound. Per the radiologist (when I asked), BIRAD score 5. US guided core needle biopsy scheduled on Monday and had a nurse navigator assigned to me who will be my contact for the pathology report. Surgeon also will be contacting me to schedule removal of lump (nurse navigator told me no matter what it is definitely getting removed). Per radiologist it is a solid mass with ill-defined borders and there is another area concerning them that needs biopsied. Hoping for the best but prepared for bad news
-
Sorry that you don't have any firm results Brneyegrl, but glad you don't have to wait too long to get them! BIRADS 5 is concerning, but not 100% certain. Nurse navigators are awesome, so glad you have one to help you advocate for yourself and make sense of things along the way. We are all "in your pocket" on Monday. ((hugs))

Biopsy done today. Now the waiting begins (again). Hoping to hear pathology results by Wednesday. Radiologist is recommending that it is removed regardless. Anyone else hear that without pathology report? I assumed I would need to know what it is before it would be approved by insurance for removal

Pathology report done. IDS grade II est negative, prog negative, her2 negative. Will consult with surgeon Friday. I have a billion thoughts and emotions right now. Will be moving on to other boards to get my thoughts in order and figure out what questions I need to be asking. Thank you for everyone for your support and mods for this forum
-
Oh Brneyegrl I'm so sorry to hear that! Did you mean IDC grade 2, triple neg? There is a triple negative forum and I'd definitively go there to talk to women about some of the different options for TN bc. Sending you ((hugs))
-
Sorry yes IDC triple negative, grade 2. I will definitely check out that board. Thank you for the info:)
