When can I return to work after UMX and DIEP flap surgery?

I'm new to this site. I've had three lumpectomies for DICS and while the third attempt cleared the margins, they found DCIS elsewhere in the breast. I am scheduled for a UMX (there's no sign of anything in the other breast, and if genetic testing is clear I'm sticking with UMX) with DIEP flap reconstruction with Dr. Greenspun (NY/CT).

I am wondering how soon others felt they could return to work. I'm a teacher at a high school. My job is not a typical office job, but I'm also not an elementary teacher which is more physical. I was told 3 weeks out minimum so I'm hoping for a total of 4. Am I being unrealistic? With three surgeries behind me, I'm anxious to avoid missing too much more work. I love my job and while I must take care of myself physically, I am emotionally and intellectually stronger when I am working.

    Hi readmore,

I am a first grade teacher. I realize that this is different from what you do, but I think stamina plays a role for all teachers. When I had my bmx, I was originally told 4-6 weeks. What I discovered is that healing is quite different for all of us. My advice is to request the maximum time that your surgeon recommends but if you feel ready sooner, let your doc know so he can medically clear you to return to work. Nothing magic happens at the 3, 4, or 6 week mark. You really have to listen to your own body. Most women feel that even if they have no pain, relatively good range of motion ,etc., that they still tire easily. Take as much time as you need. There are no prizes for going back to work quickly. Best of luck.

Everything went well for me. I could have gone back at 4 weeks with fatigue. But I took 2 months.
