Hi,

I was just diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer. Had Stage 1A uterine cancer less than a year ago. A hysterectomy took care of the uterine cancer, but now I am dealing with deciding the treatment for the breast cancer. I live in the Washington, DC area/Northern Virginia. I'm looking for a breast center/surgeon for a second opinion. Does anyone have any recommendations or positive or negative to help me decide where to go? I've met with a breast surgeon (who diagnosed me), had the genetics testing (awaiting the results), and a breast MRI. Any thoughts anyone can provide is GREATLY appreciated. My head is spinning! Thank you.

Dr. CostanzaCocilovo at INOVA, or one of her colleagues.

I was just diagnosed last month with DCIS and had surgery last Friday (home recovering now). I am in NOVA and seeing Dr. Kirsten Edmiston who is part of the INOVA Breast Care Center. I work in Healthcare and can tell you that seeing Dr. Edmiston was a no brainer. Honestly, I think I would see any of the docs in the practice because the entire group is amazing. The nurse navigator has held my hand every step of the way and they have really supported me. I've had many patients over the years see Dr. Edmiston and have nothing but good to say about her so when I first started down this path, I knew that's where I wanted to go. Good luck to you. While I'm still in the middle of recovery and have a long road to go, I feel so much better mentally now that the surgery is behind me. I hope you find the right fit doctor for you, it can make all the difference.

    Supermama-

Thank you for your advice! We know how important a good doctor is, and hearing from patients in the same boat goes a long way. We hope your recovery goes well!

Hi there. You are very fortunate to live close to a city that has several major university teaching hospitals. IMO you can't go wrong with any of them! Good luck....
