After undergoing a mastectomy, many women decide to choose breast reconstruction. This decision is quite common and whether it is taken for convenience reasons or to improve their self-image, all aspects of the intervention must be carefully analyzed before it is performed.

There are two basic types of breast reconstruction surgery. The first one uses the patient's own tissue, harvested from the abdomen or back, while the second type involves the use of silicone implants. Deciding upon the preferred method is up to the patient. Obviously, the implants do not have the same consistency as tissue, but the surgery is much faster and simpler if using them. On the other hand, breast reconstruction surgery with harvested tissue is often complex and difficult.

Before you decide to undergo breast reconstruction surgery, you should know that sometimes more than a single intervention might be needed, even if you choose it after mastectomy. The reason for this is that surgeons do not perform areola and nipple reconstruction at the same time with the rest of the breast.

Breast reconstruction with own tissue involves using abdominal muscles. This is usually directed in the chest area, under the skin, where the new breast is formed. Finally, the surgeon sews the cut on the abdomen. The best part of the procedure is that you will obtain a smaller and thinner in the end. An alternative way includes the use of the tissue from the back of the patient. As with the abdominal muscles, back muscles are redirected under the skin and repositioned on the chest, where they are used to form a pocket for the implant, or arranged in the shape of the breast.

Both types of surgery can last for several hours and may require more than a single intervention. Obstacles to achieving the desired results are excessive smoking, obesity, diabetes or cardiovascular disease.
