I'm 40 years old and have invasive ductal carcinoma. My doctor told me (over the phone, I haven't seen the report) that it's also somehow "in situ", but I don't understand how. She said it's not the "type" of in situ, but it IS in situ, and like. That's not a very useful statement for me lol.

I had my first mammogram in December. I had one just because I'd turned 40. There were results unusual enough to summon me back for a second. That was this past Tuesday, Feb. 14th. They scheduled me on the spot for a biopsy, which I had done yesterday, and today, my GP called me.

Unfortunately I don't know everything on the report, or even what they will tell me about treatment. I'm going in next week to discuss it.

    so, yeah, this is happening.

It's not at all unusual to have areas comprising both-say a small area of invasive ductal cancer within a larger area ductal carcinoma in situ

my DCIS on the left has a small focus suspected for microinvasion, meaning it has started to go beyond the duct.. for my BS and MO think that is still ok. goodluck!

watch out for the tendency to loo up everything on the internet, there is good information here and a few other places, but a lot out there that is out dated and will scare you. listen to what the professional says. when you go in, might bring in someone with you to remember, you will be very buisy trying to listen and thinking about the future.

Hi crowfeathers, and welcome to Breastcancer.org!

We hate that you have to be here, but we're really glad you found us. As you can already see, our Community is full of very helpful, knowledgeable, and supportive members. And cliff is right -- make sure you don't dive too deep into the internet pool, as there is a lot of bad information out there that can scare you.

As well as this Community, our main website, Breastcancer.org, is a great resource to help you learn about your diagnosis, treatment, and practical matters that come along with a breast cancer diagnosis. A great place to start is our Breast Cancer 101 section.

We hope this helps and that we hear more from you soon, as you learn more about your diagnosis and treatment.

Crow- so sorry you join us here, but as the others said above, you'll find great support and helpful information. It's easy to find the negatives (even here)-- bring someone with you to help hear everything and take one step at a time.

crow feathers, I feel your pain. Same thing happened to me. Turned 40, had a mammo, then BOOM...cancer. There is a thread on here for women in their 40's. I'll try to figure out how to send you the link.

There aren't many of us, feel free to PM me.

Forgot to mention, they did a biopsy on the lymph node too, and it's positive. I don't know anything else and it's kind of making me bananas.

The other thing is that my GP told me that my mammo from last week was visibly different from the one in December.

crow - so sorry you've had to join us. When are you supposed to see the report or meet with your GP? While you're waiting for the details, you can start looking for a BS (breast surgeon) and an MO (medical oncologist). You will want to talk to one of more of each kind of doc before you make any firm decisions.

MinusTwo, that's good advice. I'm to meet with the oncology people (don't know who) on Wednesday. Would have liked to see GP tomorrow to discuss the report in more detail, but, as luck would have it, tomorrow is the first day of my husband's new job. He will have the car, and I can't drive anyway.
