Blood thinner
ok have finished 2 rounds of chemo, Taxotere and cytoxan. Just diagnosed with influenza a and a PE. Oncologist on vacation. Ended up in ER. Primary care put me on xarelto. Oncologist just found out in cancun and wants to see me Monday. Told nurse this med may not be compatible with my chemo. Don't know what to do. Texted oncologist in Mexico and asked if I should stop xarelto. Waiting to hear from him. Freaking out. Any suggestions??

I'm not sure about Xarelto but I took the blood thinner Warfarin during most of my ACT chemo because I got a clot near my port. Xarelto is one of the newer blood thinners but my guess is that it will be OK with your chemo. Do NOT stop taking the Xarelto with out discussing with the doctor that prescribed it for you. You can also talk to your pharmacist about it. They should know if there is a problem with it and your chemo. But you need to have another blood thinner prescribed if you stop the Xarelto.

I was on Xarelto during chemo after not doing the Lovenox shots. I just could not give myself the shots but did get them sometimes when I was doing chemo. Here in lies the lesson. Learn from my pain. I am the WORST patient ever. I am non-compliant to a tee. Stopped doing the Lovenox, did not take the Xarelto. Another Dvt on top of old clots. Still can't take the blood thinners. Now job requires long haul flights. Just waiting for a BIG PE. The lesson is don't stop taking your blood thinners until they say to. Because of logistics can't do blood thinners anymore

I was on Xarelto after my last chemo (blood clot from last IV infusion). I was put on it by my PCP, but after I ended up in the ER and after I saw my MO the day before regarding my swollen arm. I love my MO by the way- I just think this isn't their "thing". Luckily my PCP starting seeing me and gave me some direction for the clot and what they thought may have been celllulitius. It was such a frustrating time, and I didn't feel better until she got me on track. I agree, don't just stop, and check back in with your PCP indicating what your MO said and see if they can work it out between. I do know that Xarelto has a short "1/2 life"- doesn't stay in your body for long at all (had to find that out because of my surgery). So easy to stop and get out of your system if needed. Hang in there! Feels like no one talks much about the clots but they're happening maybe more than we think.
