Where to buy inexpensive prosthetic(s) in Canada?

Just wondering where one could buy an inexpensive prosthetic breast in Canada? I know that prostheses are covered in part by the government ($190 per breast by ADP in Ontario) and the remainder (about $225 per breast) by private insurance, but what if you don't have private insurance and the cost is prohibitive? Not looking to purchase/get used ones. Is there anyone in Canada who makes some type of prosthesis that you know of? Looking for ideas my fellow Canadians....... thanks so much.

    Hi Jacklin,

In between my second mastectomy and my first reconstruction surgery, I wanted to use breast prostheses to fill out clothes, because I was very concave after bmx. I didn't know if I would do reconstruction, and I have a friend that didn't really like her silicon prosthesis. Besides, they do seem very expensive.

Initially, one of my coworkers gave me a couple of "knitted knockers" that her mom made for me from an online pattern. They fit easily into a pocketed bra (that I purchased at WalMart for under $10). This worked better when I had one remaining breast, though, as the knitted knockers are very light, and they would "creep" up during the day, so they required frequent adjustment. I understand that you can add some weight to a knitted knocker, whether a loonie or toonie or two, but I never did try that.

After that, I got a pair of weighted mastectomy prostheses from the Sears catalogue. If you check out Sears.ca and search for mastectomy prosthesis, you should find two in the catalogue. One is "lightweight", the other is described as a "weighted" mastectomy prosthesis. I purchased the weighted ones. I bought mine when they were on sale, but even at regular price they are less than $50 each.

I found that these worked well. They were weighted enough to stay put, but not heavy enough to be burdensome. They arrived a bit "pointy", but they seem to have beads inside, and squishing them around a bit made the shape more natural. They have a washable cover, and they, too, fit into an inexpensive bra with pockets.

There are lots and lots of bras that you can slip a form into. Basically, any bra that has "modesty covers" or a slim countour pad that can be removed can accommodate one of these forms. Genie bras work, too.

There is also a website for an Ontario shop called Mastectomy Lingerie and More (mlam.ca) while most of their prostheses are the expensive silicon type, they do have a couple of less expensive options.

Good luck to you. Let me know if you are able to get something that suits.

    Donna
