Australian diagnosis process

Options

Hi there,

I live in Sydney, Australia. I am a 36 year old mother of three and yesterday I discovered a lump deep behind my right nipple. It is about the size of a pea, maybe slightly bigger and sort of oblong shaped. It seems to be attached at one side to my chest wall. It is not soft, but not like cement, either.

I have an appointment with my GP tomorrow. I know he will be able to feel it (with direction from me) so I'm assuming he will start investigations. What should I expect? Ultrasound first or a mammogram as well? I have never had a mammogram.

Do they just send you to a local imaging place or are there specific breast screening clinics?

Is there anything specific I should remember to ask/expect/demand?

I've had a lump close to the surface under my arm before but the doctor and I knew it was harmless and related to breastfeeding, this was confirmed via ultrasound 18 months ago. This lump is very, very different.

Sorry, this is a bit long and doesn't make a lot of sense. I'm a bit freaked out, though I know that's silly until I have had tests.

Thanks for listening.
