Here I am. I'm a college professor and I need help with measurements. My hypoechoic mass is .6x.5x.3cm. What does that mean? Which order do they go in? It's driving me crazy!

    Hi Hopefloatesagainandagain:

I think you are asking which are the horizontal dimensions and which is the vertical? Here is a link to an extract from a 2013 document from the American College of Radiology ("ACR") regarding ultrasound:

    ACR (2013): https://www.acr.org/~/media/ACR/Documents/PDF/QualitySafety/Resources/BIRADS/02%20Ultrasound/05%20%20BIRADS%20US%20Reporting.pdf

Under "Report Organization", it states (emphasis added):

"As detailed in the General Considerations section on Labeling and Measurement (see page 30) [unfortunately, not included in this extract], when a specific sonographic finding is documented by recording a complete set of images, the longest horizontal dimension should be reported first, followed by the vertical measurement, and the orthogonal horizontal dimension last."

This is a statement regarding a convention, but admittedly leaves open the question of whether your Radiologist follows that particular convention.
