Had port removed

Hello there,

I can't seem to find the appropriate place to post this. Please move or ask me to move if there is a more appropriate location!

So my port was removed today. (Yay!) I have been laying awake for hours though because it is hurting, pulling, the whole area is cold to touch and there is blood seeping through the dressing (not a ton, but more than I would like to see). I'm a nurse and I'm not panicking or anything.

Just wondering how others did with their port removal?

Thank you!

    Hello, Nursie,

Just wanted to give you a little company, sorry you are not sleeping well tonight with the port wound. I have no experience with that yet, but maybe just direct pressure like with any wound...?

I really like a hot microwaved rice bag or hot water bottle, under blanket on my chest when I have a cold spot, it may help you sleep.

I hope you can get comfortable enough to sleep soon!

I trust that someone else with experience will chime in and help soon.

    Fearless

Aww, thanks so much Fearless. You are so kind to stop in. Wish I could offer you a spot of tea!

I have been applying pressure but the warm rice sounds very comforting. I think I will give that a try!

    Thanks so much!

    Hi, again, Nursie,

If you do not have a "real" rice bag, just find a large sock, fill with white or brown rice (uncooked) , tie the end with a piece of string and put it in the microwave for 2-3 minutes. It will be great!

    Nighty night :)

I'd call a local hospital for advice. My port site hurt after removal but there was no bleeding.
