Hearing loss age 32 post Tx

Options

hi everyone. I completed treatment in June 2015 (AC+T) for stage 2a TNBC. I had my first recon surgery a month ago. Everything has been pretty good but I woke up about 5 days ago and noticed immediately I had significant hearing loss in my left ear. I'm now 32 with no health issues other than the previous breast cancer. It's a very odd sensation I'm experiencing! I had an infection post recon which was treated with surgery on 29/12/16. I have no pain or anything else associated with the hearing loss. Has anyone experienced anything similar? I'm at a loss for what it could be and I'm doing my best to not let my mind wander over to the dark side!

My friend's mother developed hearing loss in one ear as a result of an infection. She had to get a hearing aid, and then one day, about two weeks later, her hearing returned to normal. I hope that you recover from this unfortunate side effect soon

Kat, I would recommend seeing your doctor or better yet an ear, nose, and throat specialist as soon as possible. I know someone who had a similar experience, and it turned out to be caused by shingles (chicken pox virus) in the ear. Now I have no idea if that is a possibility for you, but I wanted to mention it because if it is shingles in the ear, the sooner you start steroids for it, the better the outcome. In other words, waiting too long could mean the hearing loss is permanent. It could relate indirectly to cancer treatment in that your body has been under stress. I know that for me, I have gotten shingles a couple times when my body has been through a lot.

Kat, definitely see and Ear, Nose and Throat specialist and do it soon...not your general practioner. I have a lot of hearing loss which started years ago so was not caused by chemo. I totally agree with Shetland Pony. Call tomorrow.
