I have cancer with a bone metastasis. It was found in my femer (hip) and I was not able t walk. It was operated on and my orthopedic removed the tumor and put a nail in. For weeks after I had to use a walker, but after 12 weeks my bone was regenerating.I was also given xgeva by my oncologist. I was then told by my orthopedic that I could walk with a cane, and he released me. My oncologist recently said he wanted to do a scan ,just to check if everything is ok. Can this tell if there is no evidence of cancer in the bones? I have not had any problem walking and have no pain. I just completed 20 rounds of radiation on my breast. I have had no chemo and I am doing hormone therapy. I also had a mastectomy on my left breast and the tumor was on left hip.

Madeline:  your MO probably wants a bone scan to make sure you don't have them in other bones so they could treat them before they become big problems.

A bone scan shows any changes the bone is going through, even healing and fractures. I had a fracture in my femur last summer. Onc did xray and bone scan said it was a 7cm tumor/cancer and it wasn't it was a fracture. the Surgeon took a biopsy.

So, the bone scan will light up if the bone is healing. That said,,,,, a bone scan can show if there is no evidence of disease as long as there is no other trauma.

He did not do one yet because I am so red from radiation on the breast. It seems to be improving some. It's still very red in one area. I am hoping by the time I go back to see the radiation oncologist next Tues that it will improve.
