DCIS v LCIS
I'm assuming my mom has DCIS but I really don't know. Seems they are both same prognosis and such with the difference only being one is confined to the duct and one is in the lobe? Is there a diff in tx, life expectancy, going to cancer, etc between these 2? My mom doesn't want me to know so I'm using my bro the middleman to get info and provide info back if I can. TIA

Artista, they aren't "equivalents" of ductal vs. lobular at all.
DCIS is treated as cancer. LCIS is not
The preferred newer term for LCIS is lobular neoplasia because it really isn't carcinoma it is just considered a risk factor that you may be at higher risk for developing cancer in the future. Most women with LCIS don't go on to develop cancer, but it depends on other risk factors and family history as to how high that risk is. Often women who have LCIS who do develop cancer have DCIS or IDC-they don't necessarily develop ILC.

So the fact that mom is getting rads makes it DCIS? Thanks
-
She is not getting rads for LCIS, so yes, I would think it is DCIS.
LCIS/ALH/ADH are all commonly found in an "alphabet soup" along with DCIS or invasive cancer.

There have been some RARE papers that report using rads for LCIS, but in this case it was for PLCIS (which is sometimes treated like DCIS) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24372322
In this study they report 1% of LCIS patients got excision with radiation https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24372322. I don't know if these were or included PLCIS patients.
Anyways, any type of diagnosed LCIS is much less common than diagnosed DCIS. If I remember right, diagnosed LCIS is about 7 times less commonly diagnosed than DCIS in a SEER study in the last decade or two. But, of course, we don't know how many women are walking around with LCIS and don't know it.

Yes, both DCIS and LCIS were found in my lumpectomy. It can be very confusing and complicated.
Peace and healing,
Nanc
