Why is this happening?!

I am very happy to announce that a biopsy I had for changing micro calcifications came back BENIGN! The radiologist recommended 6 month mammo follow up. Then, my gyno called. They feel its important for me to be evaluated by a breast surgeon. What?! I asked why, and she said because I had a rating of 4 (no a,b or c given) and a benign result they wanted the surgeon to review my images, reports and do a manual breast exam. Is this normal? I was moving on from this now I'm worried again.

Be thankful that your gyn is being so cautious, and do see a surgeon whose expertise is in breasts. (Gyns are thoroughly trained to deal with issues below the waist, and the training they get in clinical breast exams is an "extra" and can be spotty.) So with a bi-rads number of 4--even with a clean biopsy and 6-month mammo recall--she is erring on the side of caution and wanting an expert to evaluate you manually. If something is brewing, you want your doctors to be aware of it early, so that if/when a tumor develops, it can be treated in a timely--and successful--way. .

Also, the breast surgeon can see and feel what "normal' I'd for your breasts so future changes, if any, can be spotted.
