Postpartum breast cancer question

Hi,

I'm 40 years old with an 8 month old. I noticed a lump when my daughter was 6 months, and sadly took two months to take action (I was in denial). Well today I had a mammogram and an ultrasound on the lump (just under nipple), and was told that there was no issue, although everyone agreed that they could feel the lump. I asked if I could have a biopsy so that I could feel more at ease that this isn't something to be worried about, and was told that since it just looked like a milk duct or breast tissue (they flip flopped on what it was), and that it didn't appear on the ultrasound, it was impossible to do a biopsy. Does this sound accurate to you? I have heard of a few cases where nothing appeared on the ultrasound or the mammogram, but a biopsy was the only way to 100% rule it out. When I pressed the doctor for more info, he said the only next step was to do an MRI but that it was expensive and likely not necessary. Knowing how aggressive postpartum breast cancer can be, I am not comfortable with this approach but am also not sure what to ask for? I would love some input.

We're so sorry for the worry you're experiencing. The lump not showing on the u/s doesn't necessarily make it impossible to do a biopsy, but it can make it more difficult. And MRIs are expensive, and if not considered medically necessary, probably wouldn't be covered by insurance. They can also be inconclusive and produce "uncertain" findings (http://www.breastcancer.org/symptoms/testing/types...). However, they are being used more and more to evaluate someone with a palpable mass that doesn't show up on other diagnostic tests. If you're concerned about more not being done, you could always seek a second opinion, or push for a biopsy on the palpable lump.

I have no advice but am also a 40 year old mom of a two month old and awaiting results of a diagnostic mammo and ultrasound.It's utterly nerve wracking! I have a Drs appt tomorrow and also struggle to know "next steps".
