Hi

I live in Niagara and have had double lumpectomy and currently undergoing radiation and was thinking about going for some reconstruction. Who are the best doctors to speak to and where are the best places to go to get information and advice?

Stacey, are you in Niagara Ontario or New York? There is a good book, The Breast Reconstruction Guidebook by Kathy Stilego, but it is focused on post-mastectomy reconstruction, so if you are looking for post-lumpectomy recon, it won't be helpful. I don't like the term, but lumpectomy dents, holes and caverns are called 'partial defects' by the medical community. I find that term offensive, as if implies that the issue isn't all that serious, when in fact it is, and if you've got one, it certainly is a full defect. If you are in Ontario, your best bet for post-lumpectomy reconstruction is to go to Toronto. PM me for for names of PSs and you can ask your PCP for a referral. The likeliest way your missing tissue areas will be supplemented is via fat grafting (essentially lipo'ing fat from a donor area of your body, processing it, and then injecting it into the sites where volume is needed). Depending on your body frame, body fat %, and the volume of the area to be filled, an implant may be a consideration.
