I'm very high risk (PALB2, ATM and a variance of PTEN, plus family history), seeing a surgeon at University of Chicago on Wednesday to discuss of bilateral prophylactic mastectomy. I'm 50 and have other health issues, so surgery is tough on my body. I'm wondering if anyone knows about any surgeons doing "minimally invasive" type surgery? I'm considering a consult a Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, but open to travel wherever.

suki - Sorry, I don't know anything about the area. You might send a message to Whippetmom since she does try to keep some lists. You can look her up & send a PM.

I think reconstruction is the hardest part. My BS said a BMX with no recon takes about three weeks for recovery. My surgery was not that bad. Definitely the thought of it was worse than the actuality. The expanders were very hard for me though.

I went to MD Anderson for a second opinion and was VERY impressed with every one I came in contact with. It is a great place. Might want to check there.

suki1724 - I am not sure what you mean by "minimally invasive." I was dx almost 15 years ago at 30 when living in Maryland, however my implants ruptured at 10yrs when I was living in the Chicago-land area. After doing my research, my plastic surgeon was Stephen Madry MD. He practices in the city and at Advocate Good Shepherd in Barrington. He was meticulous with my replacement implants, so when it was time for my hysterectomy (and I got tummy tuck), he worked in conjunction with my gynecological oncologist, Dr. Amina Ahmed. Both had rights to hospital networks in the city and at Good Shepherd, so I had my surgery there since that was close to where I lived and where I delivered my two children. Hope that helps and hope your appointment went well.
