need help confused with pet scan results
Hi
Every one, i need your help with my mom's pet scan my mom is a breast cancer survivor she was diagnosed with bc on 2012 stage iiib
recently she was suffering from bone pains for which her onc ordered us to take a shot of Zometa and also a pet scan. The scan was done on aug 2016 and we got the results yesterday. The impression in the result states as under,
(There is a new hypermetabolic focus localizedto focal prominence along right infraspinatus muscle maximum 4.3 SUV.)
Does this means a recurrence ? i have googled it and i find that 0-2.9 is something normal SUV but higher then that is a cancer activity?
what does a focus means is it a lymph node or a mass? and can a cancer recur in the muscle?
i am really lost and sad. my heart is sinking pls help me .any of you people if could answer any of my questions would be a great help
thanks

hi, I am sorry that you are going through this. However , I am confused : your mom had the scan in August and you all just got the results?
Increased metabolic focus means that this is some increase in the uptake of the contrast. It does not necessarily meets mets.
Please call your moms Onc and discuss this. It may not be anything to be worried about.
blessings to you & your mom

Dear ikc
Thanks for your replay. The nurse at onc clinic said at that time that if there would be any thing suspicious we will call you. my sis asked her onc about the delay .she said there is nothing to worry but she wants us to do an MRI now. i dont understand if nothing to worry than why do an MRI.
my mom and sis r living in u.s and i am in abroad. it is really hard for me that i am so far away that i couldn't hold my mom's hand at this time when she needs me. i can not hug or kiss her and support her. its very painfull
thanks for your support. it was a great help

I'm so sorry! I can tell how much you love your mother and how hard it is for you to be away from her.
There are cancers called sarcomas that can grow in muscle, but you really need to speak with her oncologist about the PET scan results. I can't tell for sure, but it may be that the PET scan showed something of concern, and for some reason they didn't let your sister and mom know about it, and now they realized that it's been so long so they want an MRI. In other words, maybe your mom's case was overlooked for some reason and that's why you're just recently getting the PET scan results from August.
I would definitely call or have your sister call to find out what the test results mean and why they now want an MRI. It could be nothing, but I would check with them for sure before you worry too much.

Thanks Eminly 2008 for your support.
Her onc did not discuss much about this hypermetabolic focus according to her as my mom had a node in her left lung which neither disappeared nor get enlarged its may be something like that .She said that she want's to make away her doubts by doing an MRI. this what she said on day when she gave us her pet reports .Now i and my sis have decided that we will call her on monday and will ask her about the cause of delay As my sis had called her twice and inquired about the reports. i dont understand why she did'nt let us know ? why she kept it to her?
