Hi All

Has anybody had any experience of Pro-Banthine (Propantheline) for extreme sweats?

I found a leaflet about it when I attended a hospital's Dermatology Department for my boyfriend's appointment.

My GP allowed me to try it as I was not coping with the sweats and had tried all the treatments for them.

I am having some success with them, though they have side effects similar to Clonidine and are difficult to time to take because they have to be taken at least two hours after food, then no food for an hour. As I am diabetic (Type 2), this is a bit of a problem but I'm coping with that.

I have asked on the UK Breast Cancer Care forum for Hormone therapy, and have had absolutely no reply from anyone, so I'm assuming it isn't a common treatment.

Anyone in the USA community experienced this treatment?

PS. I still get quite warm and have a tiny sweat but I'm hoping that will subside soon.

I used it for a while 30 years ago in college for an ulcer. I didn't have an side effects that I remember, and the ulcer pain was relieved while I was on it, but after a couple of attempts to stop and the pain came back again, I was switched to a different drug. Interesting that it's being used now in this capacity, because I haven't heard of anyone using it at all since then.

    Hi

I have IBS as well as other stuff. and Pro-Banthine is used as a treatment for that as well. The leaflet says it is also used for menopausal symptoms, so it is recognised it that capacity as well.

The info was only available in a dermatology department and was aimed at people with hyperhydrosis. I felt that I had crossed the line with my sweats, though. I was constantly damp and had fungal infections in my skin. My GP said that it was worth giving it a try as it targeted the same neural transmitters.

Still interested in any views anyone may have on it.
