Is cancer a possibility?

Options

in 2008 I had total mastectomy of eight breast with SNB. Was DCIS with no lymph node involvement. I now have a lump the size of a dime near scar and pain in my underarm. Could it be cancer? Or because it was DCIS I shouldn't worry? Thanks for any replies!!

Yes, you need to get it checked. You can recur even after mastectomy because it is impossible to remove every shred of breast tissue. I hope for you that it is something else

Yes it should be checked out. Most likely it's a blocked lymph node or some such, but lumps should be looked at.

I am sorry you have to deal with this scare. Absolutely check this out. Recurrence or a new primary tumor after mastectomy for DCIS and a negative sentinel lymph node is very unlikely. Scar tissue or fat necrosis or fibrosis - all benign, are all more common but you don't want to take any chances. Get it checked out and biopsied (even if imaging looks good). Should it be malignant (again, unlikely) it will have been caught early and is totally treatable. Good luck and take care.
