Mammogram before RADS?

Options

Hi,

I had an abnormal mammo back in April 2016. Went in for magnified views which came back w/microcalcifications that were in a suspicious formation. Had a stereotactic biopsy in May 2016, pathology came back that there were Atypical Lobular Hyperplasia cells present. Met w/a breast surgeon who recommended a lumpectomy of the area. Had it done in August. The pathology on that came back that I had a 3mm (very small) invasive ductal carcinoma w/a background of LCIS. A sentinel node biopsy was performed and my nodes were clear. Radiation is scheduled to happen next week, w/my set-up apt happening this Thursday. My question is: I had a mammogram last week per the radiology onco orders and a small 1cm area of microcalcificaions were found. The radiologist wants to go ahead with radiation, but I feel wary about doing it until I have those calcifications removed. Any thoughts?

I am not an expert, I would probably be concerned too.

I would ask the RO why he is not concerned and wants to proceed. There are different types of microcalcifications. Not all microcalcifications are suspicious. If you are not satisfied with the answer, ask more questions and/or consider a second opinion.

While waiting for my lumpectomy, the main nurse gave me great advice - don't be afraid to ask questions, and *you* are your own best advocate.

When you speak to the RO I would also ask whether they would be radiating that new suspicious area too.
And I would probably talk to an MO to get a differeent perspective.

    Hi Evangeline,

I'm curious if you ended up moving forward with radiation or did you have to have the microcalcifications analyzed first?

Hi Emilie and welcome to Breastcancer.org,

This thread hasn't been commented on in quite a while and the original poster hasn't been back since this post -- so, to get some answers to any questions you have, we'd suggest you start your own thread. You're likely to get many responses that way!

    We hope this helps!
