Cyst
Hi. Last year at my annual mammogram, I got a call back. I went in for another mammogram and ultra sound on my right breast. They found a cyst, and had me go back for a 6 month follow up (mammogram and ultrasound). Again, I was told it was "just a cyst". Well, now I'm approaching my yearly mammogram and they wanted another follow up ultrasound. I'm freaking out!!! If its just a benign cyst, why do I need another ultrasound one year after the initial finding? I'm terrified!!! Anyone else ever go through this? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to BCO. Depending on the tissue composition of your breasts, it can be better for their evaluations to have both types of imaging done for reference. Yes, for years I had ultrasound done following my mammograms. That was all long before -- some two decades before -- my breast cancer first appeared in a mammogram.
They are being careful to evaluate your breast health. It might be that the ultrasound is helping them see through dense tissue. It might be that they are simply watching that cyst for any changes. They are watching out for you. Breathe! Get psyched up, not psyched out!
Here is our section for members to discuss being on 6-month follow-ups__

Hello!
I feel for you! I am 39, my sister was Diagnsed with OV cancer at 40. They forund out she carries the3 BRCA1 gene mutation. So i have a 50% chance of having it. Went fro my first mammogram last week and was called back for a second one and an ultrasound on my left breast. I was freaking out! I was told after the ultrasound that my Dr. would have the results that day. I waitied until the next morning to call my Dr. He said I have very cystic breasts and they are dense which puts me at a higher risk for BC, not to mention the chance of the BRCA1 Mutation. I asked if they would biopsy or test the fluid. He assured me that i am fine for now, but will follow up in 6 months with another Mammogram and ultrasound. So i guess it is common for them to so both when you are high risk! It is scary......especially the waiting!!
