Is anyone getting Recast injections to prevent bone loss? My doctor suggested I do the injections. I'm worried about the side effects.

I am getting my 2d Reclast infusion this month. I just finished 10 years of Femara and it did do a number on my bones, gradually moving me from osteopenia to osteoporosis in years 8 to 10. Even with osteoporosis I wouldn't change taking 10 years of Femara. Anyway, I did have flu-like symtoms with a headache for about 24 to 48 hours after the infusion. I am told the side effects should be less with the 2d infusion. I was offered a choice between Reclast and Prolia. I decided to stick with reclast for now, and if that does not work for me, I will move to Prolia. I see an endocrinologist for my osteoporosis. My oncologist had no preference on which drug I should take. Fosamax kept me stable with osteopenia to year 8, and it normally takes two infusions of Reclast to stabilize so I decided to stick with Reclast for now.

I am on anastrozole which causes bone loss. They wanted to put me on Prolia because my t score was 1.4. I had a bone density and it went up to 1.1, 1 is normal. Now she wants me to go on Reclast to prevent bone loss. I am so worried about the side effects! You didn't have any achy joints and stiffness? Reviews don't help... some say no side effects some say terrible side effects.

I did have body aches, like the flu, and a headache that lasted for a day or two. I was on Femara too so it was hard to tell what was the reclast and what was the femara as far as joint/muscle stiffness/pain but I do remember the headache and body aches because I don't have those very often.

I had a Zometa infusion, with almost 3 days of first neuropathy and then "faux-flu." I also still have the bruises from the 5 attempts to start that I.V.--three weeks ago. I begged and pleaded for Prolia, an injection, for the latter reason, but my MO apparently didn't include that in her denied pre-auth appeal. No way am I doing Zometa (same drug as Reclast) again. My PCP says he will use my difficult I.V. history in his appeal. He also says that only Prolia strengthens long bones (Zometa and oral bisphosphonates help only the vertebrae, acc. to new research) and is superior at preventing or delaying bone mets. It is $5K/shot, which is why my Part D carrier wouldn't cover it (had they done so, I'd have been kicked back out of the "donut hole" and into "catastrophic" coverage--with very low co-pays). Many more part Dcarriers are cheaping out too.

Reference your statement above. My oncologist at Johns Hopkins told me there is NO data to support the claim that either RECLAST or Prolia have any effect on preventing breast cancer recurrence. There have been more studies on RECLAST with mixed results - some showing there could be an positive affect on preventing a recurrence and some showing no affect. There has only been one study on Prolia that I am aware of. The study comparing RECLAST and Prolia with stage IV breast cancer patients showed less fracture/complications with Prolia but time to progression and overall survival were the same. Prolia is the new latest and greatest drug for osteoporosis, but RECLAST has a long track record for treating osteoporosis. They are both good drugs for treating osteoporosis.
